The appendix is a few centimeters long tube-like organ. It is connected to the beginning of your large intestine, also known as the colon. This is typically located beneath and to the right of your belly button. You are most likely aware that the appendix can become inflamed. If your appendix needs to be removed, you will not experience any long-term complications. This is a procedure used to remove the appendix. Appendicitis is cured by removing the appendix. If untreated, appendicitis can rupture or burst open, causing severe illness or even death. Appendectomy is a common surgery in which the appendix is removed. Making one larger cut, or incision, below and to the right of your belly button is one method for removing the appendix. This is known as an open appendectomy. Your laparoscopic appendectomy will be performed under general anesthesia. This means you will be asleep during surgery. After surgery, the surgeon will close your incisions with tiny stitches, staples, surgical tape, or glue. After you've fallen asleep, the surgeon makes an incision near your belly button and inserts a small device known as a port. The port creates an opening through which your surgeon can inject gas into the abdomen. This makes room for the operation. A small camera is then inserted through the port. The surgery is shown on a screen in the operating room by the camera. Once the surgeon can see clearly, more ports are inserted to allow the surgeon to insert long, narrow instruments.
